Henny Hurtz Talks The Voice of BOVELL, Iyahhtown and Building His Own Legacy
Independent artist Henny Hurtz, known on Instagram as @mrohennasy, is not just making music. He is building his own world.
His movement is called Iyahhtown. It includes music, trading cards, clothing and future events. For Henny, this is bigger than one song or one project. It is about building something that can last.
We spoke to Henny about his journey, his debut LP The Voice of BOVELL, his time in Barbados, and what he wants to do next.
For people hearing about you for the first time, who is Henny Hurtz?
Henny Hurtz is an independent artist who has been doing music since he was young.
He started rapping at 13, but says he began taking it more seriously when he moved to Barbados in 2013, aged 20.
Living in Barbados changed a lot for him. He met different artists, saw a different side of the music scene, and started thinking bigger.
One big moment was meeting Tommy Lee Sparta at a show. Being around that kind of energy helped him see music in a new way.
While in Barbados, Henny also started playing around with his voice more. He began experimenting with different tones and sounds when rapping. That helped shape the style he uses today.
His sound is not just straight rap. It has Caribbean influence, ragga rap energy and his own style mixed together.
Your debut LP is called The Voice of BOVELL. What does “BOVELL” mean?
The name BOVELL has a personal meaning for Henny.
It comes from John Redman Bovell, Henny’s great-great-great-grandad. John Redman Bovell is on the Barbados two-dollar bill and is known for helping save the sugar industry in Barbados.
For Henny, calling the project The Voice of BOVELL is a way of paying respect to his family history.
He sees the project as him speaking as Bovell’s voice in the modern day.
The project is personal, spiritual and musical. It is personal because it connects to his family. It is spiritual because the songs come from his own story and growth. It is musical because Henny wanted this LP to be better than his last mixtape.
For him, The Voice of BOVELL is about showing progress.
What does “Iyahh” mean, and what is Iyahhtown?
Henny Hurtz picked up the word “Iyahh” while living in Barbados.
It is a word used in the Caribbean, and to Henny it gives a feeling of confidence and self-power.
That is where Iyahhtown came from.
At first, Henny was around music in Barbados, but he says there was not much of a rap scene at the time. Still, the experience helped him learn. He also met people who taught him more about the music business.
After leaving a Bajan label in 2019, Henny focused on being independent. He started Hennyway Productions, then launched Iyahhtown in 2022.
Iyahhtown is now his main movement.
It is not just a label. It is an entertainment and lifestyle brand. It includes music, trading cards, clothing and more plans for the future.
How did The Heart of Iyahh TCG online store start?
The idea came from Henny playing Yu-Gi-Oh! with his friend McRensta.
That gave him the idea to bring trading cards into the Iyahhtown world.
From there, The Heart of Iyahh TCG was created.
The store currently sells trading cards and collectables. But Henny wants it to grow into something bigger.
In the future, he wants to sell Iyahhtown clothing, merchandise and other products through the brand.
For Henny, music is only one part of the plan. He wants Iyahhtown to become a full creative world.
What has been the hardest part of being an independent artist?
For Henny, the hardest parts have been funding and getting access to bigger platforms.
He feels his style of ragga rap has made things harder. He believes the industry has not fully understood his sound yet.
He also says building his foundation in Barbados was not easy. He had to work with what he had and keep pushing.
But Henny does not see that as a reason to stop.
He believes this is part of the journey. In his mind, the industry is not meant to catch up straight away. He is focused on setting his own goals, staying consistent and building step by step.
The bigger aim is legacy.
Henny wants to build something for the future and leave something behind for the kids.
He says the music may slow down one day, but Iyahhtown never will.
What should people expect from Henny Hurtz next?
Henny has a lot planned.
He is working towards a future 20-track project called A.N.I.S.A., which he hopes to release by 2028.
He also wants to keep growing The Heart of Iyahh TCG. One of his long-term goals is to open a physical store.
On top of that, Henny is planning an Iyahhtown clothing line. He hopes to start with hats and launch the clothing side by 2027.
Over the next 12 months, Henny wants to see real progress. He does not want to be in the same position he is in now.
A successful year for him would mean being further ahead in life, further ahead in music, and closer to his bigger goals.
He wants to be at least halfway through the A.N.I.S.A. project, complete photoshoots for the clothing line, shoot an advert, start branching into Iyahhtown events, and grow a YouTube podcast channel to 500 subscribers.
Final Word
Henny Hurtz is still an undiscovered artist, but he is not waiting around for the industry to give him permission.
He is building his own lane through Iyahhtown.
From The Voice of BOVELL to trading cards, clothing, future events and new music, Henny is thinking bigger than one release.
For him, this is about music, family, culture and legacy.
