The Tottenham grime veteran reflects on his latest GRM Daily freestyle, his influence on UK music and why his journey is far from finished.
For over a decade, Shocka has been a distinctive voice in British grime. From his early success with legendary Tottenham collective Marvell to collaborations with some of the UK's most respected MCs, his career has been defined by lyrical ability, resilience and an unwavering commitment to his message.
Now, following his latest appearance on GRM Daily's Invite Only, Shocka sits down with DUB 5 Times to reflect on his evolution, his legacy and what comes next.
A Special Return to GRM Daily
Released on 29 October 2026, Shocka's Invite Only freestyle sees him reconnect with GRM Daily founder Posty, delivering a deeply personal performance that showcases his lyrical development and the experiences that have shaped him.
For Shocka, the invitation carried particular significance.
"Posty only invites people that he respects, and the people know this," he explains.
"It was an opportunity to show myself, Posty and the people that he made the right decision. I wanted them to see my growth."
With some listeners potentially discovering his music for the first time in years, Shocka viewed the appearance as an opportunity to reintroduce himself.
"Some of the GRM Daily listeners haven't heard me for the last 10 years. I wanted them to appreciate my growth as an artist."
The Marvell Legacy and a Generation That Changed Grime
Before establishing himself as a solo artist, Shocka was one-third of Marvell, alongside Double S and Vertex.
Emerging during a defining period for UK grime, the trio built a reputation for their energetic performances, distinctive identities and lyrical ability, touring alongside major names including Skepta and Chip.
Looking back, Shocka remains proud of what the group represented.
"We brought something so unique. The group I was in, Marvell, was special. I still haven't seen a Black trio like us."
He also recognises the wider contribution of his generation.
"That whole generation was special. We really set the foundation for most of the things you see today. We upped the levels from lyricism to videos to style. Everything changed, and I'm proud to have played my tiny part."
Conscious Grime and Collaborating With the Best
Shocka has continued to develop his sound through his Conscious Grime series, blending traditional grime energy with personal reflection and purposeful lyricism.
His 2026 project Conscious Grime 2 featured an impressive collection of collaborators, including Frisco, Big Narstie, Big Zuu, Maxwell D, Bruza and Roachee.
The series continued with Conscious Grime 3, including his collaboration with Jordan Stephens of Rizzle Kicks.
Despite working with established names across the scene, Shocka's perspective remains grounded in genuine artistic relationships.
"I'm so grateful for every artist I've worked with because they didn't have to help me out," he says.
"Most of them never charged me, which is a blessing, and the best part is they're all artists I truly respect. None of it was done just for clout."
Finding Strength Through Vulnerability
Beyond music, Shocka has established himself as an author, speaker and mental health advocate, using his experiences to encourage conversations around self-love, recovery and personal growth.
His book, A Section of My Life, documents his experiences, while his music continues to explore themes that resonate beyond entertainment.
For Shocka, opening up about his life has strengthened the bond between himself and his supporters.
"Telling my story so openly was the best thing that happened to me, and I thank myself for having the courage to do it."
"It's made my relationship with my supporters so much better. I feel like they know me so well, which is every artist's dream, to connect on a deeper level."
His philosophy is simple:
"Vulnerability is a beautiful thing."
What's Next for Shocka?
Having experienced the highs and lows of the music industry, Shocka is approaching his next chapter with confidence, keeping his future plans deliberately under wraps.
When asked what listeners should expect heading into 2027, he offered a characteristically bold response:
"I don't want to say too much. My name's Shocka, I need to shock people. Just know this is only the beginning. More greatness on the way."
With a career already spanning some of British grime's most important eras, Shocka continues to demonstrate that longevity is about more than remaining visible. It's about continuing to evolve.
His latest GRM Daily appearance is another reminder of his ability to connect with listeners through both lyrical skill and personal honesty.
